An HRCT (High-Resolution Computed Tomography) scan of the chest is an advanced imaging test that provides highly detailed images of the lungs and surrounding chest structures. It is especially useful for evaluating lung diseases and abnormalities.
HRCT uses thin slices (usually 1–2 mm) and special algorithms to provide higher resolution images of the lungs. It focuses more on fine lung details than broader structures.
HRCT is used to diagnose or evaluate:
Interstitial lung disease (ILD)
Pulmonary fibrosis
Emphysema
Bronchiectasis
Sarcoidosis
COVID-related lung damage
Unexplained chronic cough or shortness of breath
Usually, no special preparation is needed. In most cases:
Fasting is not required
Remove metal items or jewelry before the scan
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
You will lie flat on a CT scanner table.
You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds while the scan is taken.
The scan typically takes 10–15 minutes.
It is painless and non-invasive.
