Allergy Test – Overview

An Allergy Test helps identify substances (called allergens) that trigger allergic reactions like sneezing, skin rashes, asthma, itching, or swelling.

Types of Allergy Tests

1. Total IgE Test

  • Measures overall Immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in the blood

  • High IgE suggests an allergic tendency

  • Sample Type: Blood

2. Specific IgE Test (Allergen-Specific Blood Test)

  • Detects reaction to specific allergens like:

    • Dust mites

    • Pollen

    • Animal dander

    • Foods (e.g., peanuts, milk, eggs, shellfish)

    • Insects (e.g., bee stings)

    • Molds

    • Drugs (e.g., penicillin)

3. Skin Prick Test (SPT)

  • Small amounts of allergens are pricked into the skin

  • Reaction (redness/bump) indicates allergy

  • Performed by specialists (allergist/dermatologist)

4. Patch Test

  • Used for skin allergies (eczema, contact dermatitis)

  • Allergen patches placed on the back for 48–72 hrs

Test Preparation

4-6 hours of fasting required but Overnight fasting is preferred. During fasting only plain water is allowed. Urea &. Creatinine report is Required within last 15 days. Diabetic patients should have light breakfast 4 to 6 hours before the test time on the day of test, and must take the advised medications prescribed. It is important NOT TO MISS the diabetic medication in the morning of the test date. DO NOT TAKE INSULIN on the day of the test, before the test.
