Kidney function tests help assess how well your kidneys are filtering waste, balancing fluids, and maintaining electrolyte levels.


βœ… Essential Kidney Function Tests (KFT / RFT)

1. Serum Creatinine

  • Normal Range:

    • Men: 0.7–1.3 mg/dL

    • Women: 0.6–1.1 mg/dL

  • High Levels: Indicate impaired kidney function

2. Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)

  • Normal Range: 7–20 mg/dL

  • Measures nitrogen from urea waste in blood

3. Uric Acid

  • Normal Range:

    • Men: 3.4–7.0 mg/dL

    • Women: 2.4–6.0 mg/dL

  • High levels can cause kidney stones or gout

4. eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate)

  • Calculated from serum creatinine, age, sex

  • Normal: >90 mL/min/1.73 mΒ²

  • Used to stage Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

5. Urine Routine Test

  • Checks for protein, sugar, blood, pus cells

  • Helps detect infections or early kidney damage

6. Urine Microalbumin (ACR – Albumin/Creatinine Ratio)

  • Detects very early kidney damage, especially in diabetics

7. Electrolytes (Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻, HCO₃⁻)

  • Abnormal levels may indicate kidney dysfunction

Test Preparation

4-6 hours of fasting required but Overnight fasting is preferred. During fasting only plain water is allowed. Urea &. Creatinine report is Required within last 15 days. Diabetic patients should have light breakfast 4 to 6 hours before the test time on the day of test, and must take the advised medications prescribed. It is important NOT TO MISS the diabetic medication in the morning of the test date. DO NOT TAKE INSULIN on the day of the test, before the test.
