What is the Prolactin Test?

The Prolactin test measures the level of prolactin hormone in your blood.
Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland and is mainly responsible for:

  • Stimulating breast milk production after childbirth.

  • Supporting reproductive and metabolic functions.


Why is it Done?

In Women

  • Irregular or absent periods

  • Unexplained infertility

  • Nipple discharge (galactorrhea) when not pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Symptoms of early menopause

In Men

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Low sex drive

  • Infertility

  • Breast enlargement (gynecomastia)

In Both

  • Suspected pituitary gland disorders (like prolactinoma, a benign tumor)

  • Unexplained headaches or vision problems (if tumor suspected)
